Toforest Johnson Forum
Upcoming Forum: "Justice for Toforest Johnson"
Sunday, December 7 | 12:15–1:30pm
Trinity Commons Episcopal Student Center
Saint Andrew’s is grateful for the opportunity to host an event with Greater Birmingham Ministries on faith, justice, and the call to act on behalf of Toforest Johnson, who has spent more than 26 years on Alabama’s death row for a crime he did not commit. Convicted in 1998 for the 1995 murder of Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputy William G. Hardy—despite overwhelming evidence of his innocence—Toforest has consistently maintained that he is innocent.
More than ten witnesses testified that he was across town at the time of the crime. There was no physical evidence linking him to the scene, and no eyewitnesses placed him there. Yet the Alabama Attorney General continues to pursue his execution.
This grave injustice has drawn national attention. Those calling for a new trial include former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Drayton Nabers Jr., former Governors such as Robert Bentley, former Attorneys General including Bill Baxley, U.S. Senator Doug Jones, and current Jefferson County District Attorney Danny Carr.
We will gather with Akeriya “Muffin” Terry, the youngest daughter of Toforest Johnson, to learn more about her father’s case, hear clips from the award-winning Earwitness podcast, produced by Birmingham journalist Beth Shelburne, and explore how we can stand in solidarity with Toforest and his family in their ongoing fight for justice.
The event is free and open to the public, so please spread the word and join us!
