Music

Music plays a significant role in our liturgy at St. Andrew’s, and an overwhelming majority of our parishioners feel that music enhances their worship experience. During the high festive seasons of Christmas, Epiphany, and Easter, as well on special feast days, our Eucharists are fully sung, including sung Psalms, Alleluias, and Prayers. Services during Advent and Lent observe solemn liturgies with sung service music. The parish uses only The Hymnal 1982 and has a long-established preference for classical sacred choral works rather than less formal music.

Choir Rehearsal
Wednesday 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

“The music at St. Andrew’s resonates with me because our music borrows from the ancient Church, the medieval church, and the post-reformation Anglican church. It inspires reverence and invokes a sense of tradition and collective memory. I wouldn’t change a thing.”

St. Andrew’s Parish Choir

The choir of St. Andrew’s serves the parish on an academic calendar schedule, beginning after Labor Day and ending on Trinity Sunday. The choir, made of up several volunteer parishioners, lay clerks, and scholars from local universities adds depth to services at St. Andrew’s with their developed musical ability, through anthems, anglican chant, and hymn singing. If you are interested in joining the choir please contact Cody Lawyer, organist & choirmaster at music@standrewsbham.org.

London 2024

In June of 2024, the choir of St. Andrew’s will travel with other church choirs of Birmingham to London to participate in Vox Anima’s “Festival of Church Music” at Saint John’s Smith Station. In addition to the festival, the parish choir will join the choirs of Croydon Minster on June 9th for Eucharist and Evensong. This incredible opportunity is a honor to be invited to participate in and is evidence of the choir’s ability and work at St. Andrew’s. For more information or ways to contribute to the trip, please contact Cody Lawyer at music@standrewsbham.org.

Organ

St. Andrew’s completely refurbished the Nave’s organ from 2015-2022. After initial inspection of the gallery’s Dutchcraft organ and the chancel’s Austin organ discussion between Norris & Associates culminated into a 3-phase plan to refurbish the organs. The goal was to leave St. Andrew’s with an organ of extraordinary sonic beauty, flexibility of tone, and mechanical reliability, which was certainly accomplished. Services at St. Andrew’s are complimented by the wonderful 33 rank organ.
