From the Organist & Choirmaster
This Saturday at 5:00pm at Bluff Park United Methodist Church in Bluff Park, the community choir I have sung in since its foundation in 2017, will perform our annual summer concert. Iron City Singers, founded in the summer of 2017, began with just about 10 members meeting at a Lutheran Church off of Valleydale Rd. Eight years later, we have upwards of 40 members singing this summer. This summer is particularly special because our founder and artistic director, Charles Henry, is moving away from Birmingham to pursue his DM at UT Austin. He swears he will come back in the summers, but all of Iron City Singers want this concert to be extra meaningful to him as he embarks on this new chapter of his life.
We will sing such great repertoire including two exclusively “Anglican” pieces of church music, C.V. Stanford’s ‘Magnificat’ from his evening canticles in Bb, as well as Arvo Part’s ‘Bogoroditse Djevo.’ I will accompany the choir on the Magnificat which is familiar to Saint Andrew’s as the parish choir has sung this set of evening canticles many times.
I hope you will join me and the singers from Iron City Singers this Saturday, August 2nd, at Bluff Park United Methodist Church!
